Hey guys,
Most of you are likely unaware of this but I've made the decision that it's time to move on from my management duties here at rG. With me continuing to run this place, it's going nowhere. I just don't have the time.
Our CS:S dedicated server is going to be dissolved Aug 15th, 2009. In a few weeks. It will be a sad day to see the likes of D2, Office and DM go down but that's part of life I guess. The cost to keep these servers going is just too much considering I might play CS once a month or so.
Foo has already secured a new 32 slot Office server for community use. You can find more information about that server in his sig.
The forum and Ventrilo will remain unchanged. Stylz is taking over management of the website account. I believe him and Ego will be keeping vB updated, etc.
I'm not leaving the community, I just can't manage things anymore. I'll still be here daily to give my thoughts, etc.
For now we'll assume Foo, Stylz and Ego are the head people around here. Once we have time to further discuss things, we'll have more clarification about duties, etc.
My sincere apologies to the Dust2 and Crackhouse crowd. Those servers will be missed by MANY but as mentioned, the cost of keeping those going doesn't make sense.

Expect all the changes, etc completed by mid month.

Jeff, no apologies needed, when its time its time. You have triumphed in more ways than 1. Your heart and soul has been put into this community. Unfortunately it doesnt reap the same rewards as we all initially hoped it would.
However you can rest well at night knowing that you gave 110%. Sometimes it takes more than just a website, community and servers to make this machine function on its own, NR/RG never made it around that first bend. There were many more triumphant times than there were bad times and again, you can rest well remembering all those triumphs.
This is in no way a defeat to the community or your personal character, there are sooo many ways now that we can stay in contact with each other, those of us who havent moved on and make RG/NR a pitstop for a few minutes a few times a week/month.
Eventually Foo, Stylez and Ego will feel this burden (if they havent already) and cave to the pressure of a life balanced between family and games. In reality, family does come ultimately first.
I wish the 3 Amigos much success as the baton is passed and it will be passed again, its just the inevitable evolution of things to come. Take no negative from what I am saying, as its been said time and time again, "its just time to move on".
Werther or not this community stays intact as a whole in the next few months is something that will test its internet fortitude and sustainability but do take heed, if it takes money from your pocket every month and no one feels this community is worth while to give a few extra bucks here and there for the services it provides to the youth of this generation, no excuses are acceptable, if you play the servers you need to pay for the services.... any way possible, allowances, salaries, tips, good grade money plain and simple. This is not an attack to the ones who have contributed, I dont contribute, because I dont play the servers. I come here for the conversation from time to time, and even then, its dwindled to nothingness, I am just a shadow of my former involvement, checking in from time to time for no reason but to appease my boredom.
For so long this generation expects things for free without knowing the true financial, personal and mental burden it poses on a small group of people, its just selfish and unacceptable in my book.
This community needs an enema, a virtual douching or sorts. It has the traffic, the volume and the ability to make something more than what it is today, just sometimes there are obstacles, financial, creativity, vision, insight a pulse on what drives the machine to its own inevitable self sustenance.
The short of what I am saying or tried to say is, good luck Jeff, much respect from the bottom of my heart for all that you and the 3 amigos have done to help this carry on its tradition for so many years. Facebook bitch ( http://www.facebook.com/bryan.duncanMILTON ).

I think it would be impossible for anyone to pull that post apart and show any negativity... it was perfect and true.
This website was always my personal hobby / passion. I didn't frequent any other communities and I never messed around with any other clans, vents, etc. It was always rG through and through. Even working on stuff like the website, etc didn't seem like work to me. It was a hobby I enjoyed. Unfortunately that enjoyment and the financial burden finally caught up to me when my son was born. I guess it put some things into perspective.
I can't begin to tell you guys how much I enjoy everyone's company. Just a week or two ago we ended up with 20 or so of us in Ventrilo. The amount of laughs we had far outweigh anything else this community could offer me. I feel that will continue with the efforts of the 3 Amigos (lol, I like that).
I think Whoopsie's point about a free ride is something everyone should really think about. The new owner's are going to need financial help, plain and simple. I'd hope that some of you guys will reconsider donating. Even if it's just $5 a month. And honestly, most of you COULD spare $5 a month. It's true *shrug*. You guys may recall when I removed donations from the community. I've never said this until now but the only reason I did that was because it was demoralizing to come on everyday and see absolutely no help coming in. There were a select few who did their best to help but for the most part, no one gave a shit. That MUST change if this community is to grow.
Aside from that, the website, etc should survive. It's not the most interesting place to discuss things (rather boring and dead) but again, that comes back to the fact only a select few make threads. The rest just post their "lol" "whoa" "fap fap fap" comments without making any contributions.
I look forward to keeping in touch with EVERYONE. I haven't been playing games for a week or so now and I don't think that will change much. D3 will definitely suck my life away but for now I've been focusing more on my family and my business.

Thank Jeff (CdnBacon) for everything you have done for this community. You have helped this community grown with your time, hard work, and ultimately...your interest. Its sad to see you go, but no doubt that your family and your pursuits into other endeavors is utmost important. I wish you the best.
I loved playing NR servers when all was "good". But still, I haven't played the NR DM server for a real long time (10+ months). What has kept me around is the community. I agree with Whoopsie that the conversation lately has dwindled to nothingness.
With the management taking things over, preservation of what make this place great is important. But improvements, suggestions should be planned to improve the atmosphere of NR. Monetary help (donations) is vital to an extent that the fun factor, the enjoyment on the servers is a priority. With much enjoyment, and high numbers of players, those factors would "transfer" in participating here in the community (website).
There should be a separate thread with suggestions on what to do next, and what should be added or changed. I mean to me, this is a wake-up call to show how fragile this community is in. But luckily, Foo, Stylez and Ego along with what's left from community are prepared to preservative what make this place great.

I dont know about the rest of ya but I don't know alot of "gamers" out in the real world, who enjoy expierencing the many new games from all the many different genres, like I do.
I do on the other hand know quite a few right here, who, I can without question, guarantee i'll have by my side killing murloc's, rescuing hostages, killing nazi's, rezzing me from the dead, being my co-pilot and staying up for almost 2 days straight exploring a brand new world.
That's the reason I have stayed around and that's the reason I will continue to stay around.
The website keeps us all in contact, gives all of us a place to talk about what ever were into at the time when we can't do it live on vent because of RL schedules. I will do anything I can to make sure that continues.
Office is where it all started for me here in rG and I can't see us without it. No matter how much I am into one game I always come back to that and can enjoy the fuck outta myself.
If your a diehard gamer like the rest of us, speak up, let us know your interests because you could be missing out on the crap load of fun we have together weekly if not daily in vent as we play great new games.
Diablo3, Star Wars Online, Modern Warfare 2, L4D2, Champions Online, AION to name a few of the many titles I guarantee a nice size crowd of us will be kicking ass in the coming months.
Besides that this place has also put me in contact with alot of smart people that have really taught me alot about computers. I couldnt change a stick of RAM before 5 years ago now I have built two computers with very little problems and it feels great.
Sorry I just ranted on but thats my feelings on this place which I hope quite a few others share and I look forward to the future.

well bacon, life hits you hard and you deal with it as best you can. im none too surprised about what your doing. with the second kid now, you deserve a pat on the back for doing what you did, for as long as you did. not that you'll be gone for good, but best of luck to you in all your future endeavors.
i think that the new leadership will prove to be an interesting adventure. Ego is obviously familiar with how things work around here. Stylz, aside from electing to become the new head hancho, probably deserves it the most. I've noticed him,over the years, putting alot of time into making this place kick ass :) with making the vids, doing the fight clubs in office, etc. Foo is a most reliable individual. none of his decisions are made without long and serious thought beforehand. im positive anything he decides for the community will be for the better in the long run. Definitely a stand out person, i would know, i live with the fucker :P (<3 you foo) he's bailed my ass out of more hard times than i care to talk about.
things will be awesome in the long run, im sure of it. this is all coming from me, which might not seem like alot to most of you. but i've been around here for a long time dudes. about the same amount of time as Foo, Stylz, Jai, Yarr, Ken, Ego, Karma, the list goes on.. this is all if im not mistaken of course :p i've just chosen never to really make a presence of myself. thru good times and bad, ups and downs, RG keeps rockin! and besides that, if this place ever did call it quits for good, i'd be gamer homeless. NR/RG is the first and only gaming community i've ever been a part of.
final thought, bacon, good luck! the new "3 Amigos" as bacon put it, do your best! i'll help in any way i can, just ask :D and the vid is for bacon :cool:

Well there is not much to add to whats been said it will be sad to see the servers go but there are more important things then gaming. It will be sad but I am confident that the community will stay strong continue to gain new people from the new office server. But I also know that we will lose people from the other server which is sad but its part of life.

Great thoughts guys I have really enjoyed reading this thread even though the subject is a serious one.
On the subject of the Dedicated box ( and thereby the css servers going) This community was at one time a Teamspeak and an Office server which grew new servers that ultimately broke away to there own communities(several of which are still going strong today) We will be re-opening donations the reason I point this out is mainly for you DM and D2 players I am well aware of how popular crackhouse became (I don't understand since I have always hated that map) and if the donations outweight the overhead we will expand, most likely by adding a crackhouse server 1st.
I have taken up the commitment of ensuring that even without donations Office will still be there and I could not bring myself to put up the DM and D2 as I would never play them and they would receive less attention than needed to ensure all is well.(plus it would be like me buying tampons)
Looking forward the community will remain intact as it is now but with new figureheads, we are still the same group of friends playing the same games online.
No-one is leaving and the only change is we no longer have a dedicated box but thats not a bad thing and you will see why if you go play on the new 100tic office(runs amazing and the bill is far cheaper than the box).
The loss of the other 2 servers will allow us to re-consolidate our player base and then grow from there. My advice to you D2 and DM players would be to start a thread and see how many people are truely willing to help foot the bill and hopefully get Joltz and Obscured input on the mangement of the server, personally i feel any future additions to the community in the way of css would be in the form of these 32slot 100tic servers.

Well Bacon, sad to see you step down as head-honcho, but where the website was flourishing, the servers were going a bit downhill, Hard to fill etc. I'm eager to see where things will go, but I'm also a bit scared, But In the end as long as the forums are up, and we have the core group in the forums and vent like usual, I'm sure Refuge Gaming as a group that takes those first steps in games will still be here, and will still be fun, regardless of the C:SS servers, etc. So, Thanks for keepin' everything nice around here man.

I don't think anything new can be said but Bacon I would like to thank you for 2 great years of Office and keeping everything running smoothly, I hope to still see you in the forums/games.

I'm not in a position to guarrentee monthly or even semi regularly because of no internet account/credit card but I will put an honest effort into trying to figure a way out because I really don't want to see this community/servers leave.

I've been to other servers...they never compared. I mean our servers lagged and crashed and got no reg like a sailor gets syphilis but that didn't mean anything to me.

Flo I am going to be painfully honest here. Shut your fucking mouth. Playing on the servers was a privelege, not a right, you didn't pay for it therefore no wrong was done to you, you have absolutely no fucking right to be pissed. And it makes me PISSED to see you thinking you have a right to be pissed about the server going down when you were a freeloader. I am not terribly happy about it but I sure as fuck didn't pay for the server to stay up so do me a favor and either thank bacon for giving you all that time to play on it or shut the fuck up.

I'm going to be the Good Cop for this one, as I'm very late to this. Flo, they're right, man. Unless you are willing to put money forward for D2 to stay up, you really have no right to be upset.
It would be the same for me when Office went down. I was upset but only because it was gone, not because it was taken down. They (Bacon) are not required to keep any of the servers up. He did it (as he said) to give like-minded people a nice place to play. And, it was (for the most part).
If you put some money forward, you have a right to be upset and hopefully your example will get others motivated to put in a little money. The more who do it, the less any one individual has to pay, unless of course, you'd make an upgrade for it. =)
